Szapáry Castle

The castle, located a 5-minute drive from the Park Hotel, is an important point of the early Baroque of western Transdanubia from an art historical point of view and is perhaps one of the oldest buildings in the town of Bük.

The original castle was built by István Felsőbüki Nagy in the 1690s, but research suggests that the predecessor of the current building was rebuilt and expanded several times.

The name Szapáry stuck to the building relatively late. The gradually impoverished Felsőbüki family sold this building to the Jankovics counts in the first half of the 19th century, and the Szapáry family inherited it from them much later.

The magnificent property was owned by the family that gave it its name until 1949, when the local production cooperative took over the building and used it for economic purposes for almost two decades. Fortunately, this unworthy use was ended by the intervention of the county council, and in 1966, the castle was renovated and transformed in accordance with its architectural values.

The renovation was successful, and in the autumn of 1972, the newspapers of the time were already happy to report on the latest attraction of the “world-famous Bük”, the opening of the 30-room castle hotel. The spa town of Vas has always been famous for its pioneering role, so it is not surprising that the Szapáry Castle was the first – true castle hotel in our country.

Currently, the building is privately owned, and its imposing building and garden can be viewed from the outside by those interested.
