When we “flipped” the pages of the online history book of Bükfürdő – the first hit on the association of golf and Bükfürdő was a fiery red Volkswagen for sale by a local subsidiary of the world-famous Wolfsburg vehicle manufacturer, sometime in the late 70s. Of course, we weren’t exactly looking for this combination of words, so we had to skip a few more decades, and our virtual journey led all the way to 1990, where the columns of Nemzeti Sport happily announced that the construction of the course in the settlement had been completed and that the great meritorious could take possession of it in 1991. Life often overwrites things, so the unparalleled 27-hole golf course only reached its perfect condition in the spring of 1992, and that was when one of the largest courses in Europe, with its hills, valleys and ponds, perfectly compliant with international standards, opened, along with the clubhouse.

“Bükfürdő is ready for golf! Dentists, rheumatologists, physiotherapists, tremble!” – the loud-voiced journalist jokingly announced the grandiose premiere in the columns of the contemporary newspapers. A premiere that was raised to an even higher level by the presence of no less sports icons than Olympic gold medalists Tamás Darnyi, Rita Kőbán and Erika Mészáros. Returning home from one of the most successful Olympics in Hungarian sports history – Barcelona – with a glittering collection of medals, they immediately became honorary club members of Birdland.

The course, which is now more than 30 years old, has served as the venue for many professional competitions and still welcomes lovers of the sport with open arms, or even those who have never held a golf club in their hands.
